Some three card variations

Post by Nemia » 05 Jul 2017, 14:57

Three cards are THE classic spread.

We can either read them as "sacra conversazione", i.e., the main actor is in the middle and the other two relate to it, like in an altar painting.

Or we read it as "moulin rouge fonce", i.e. the left card is the focus card (the mill) which is qualified by the second card (the red mill) which is again qualified by the third card (the dark red mill).

(These are my two silly shorthand ways of remembering my reading style - the second style is of course influenced by Lenormand techniques but it does some interesting things also for tarot).

And then of course we can read positional, either as a line from left to right, or in any other shape

linear:

Past - present - future

Heart - head - hand

What I want - what I need - what I get

vertical:

Root - stem - leaf

like steps upwards:

what I have to accept - what I must understand - what I can change

Thesis - antithesis - synthesis

Problem - chance - solution

There is much much more of course...

I work mostly with three card spreads because I sit at night whilst everyone else is watching television and I can just discreetly draw and read to my heart's content.

Some excellent ideas here nemia. Thank you. It never occurred to me to read anything other than linear!

At the moment I just do a linear one (because I'm still learning).....

Issue at hand....... where it leads (near future)...... how it will turn out (distant future).

I try to keep things simple.

Yes, three card spreads are great and compact :-)

I forgot to add the bridge spread:

...........3 (the bridge)
1.........................2

1: where you are
2: where you want to go
3: how you get there

So many things you can do with just three cards!

Thought I would add another one to the mix.

I managed to pull this together after reading the article CharlotteKAT posted about shadow work here viewtopic.php?f=12&t=266

1. Taken from the top of the deck
Scratching the surface: What's on the surface. What you already know

2. From the middle
Dig a little deeper: What you know but haven't or don't want to acknowledge

3. From the base
Rock bottom: Shadow aspect. What you are unaware of

I'm pretty sure you could use this for just about anything. Ooo you could even turn it into a six card spread and use it for decision making :D

I had to take a picture, it was SUCH a strong reading, couldn't have picked more meaningful cards for a book illustration if I tried! Spot on.

I promise, this is a great spread. It treats the whole pack of cards as oracle and metaphor of the mind. Thank you!!!

Although my life is very challenging right now so maybe I'll wait a little before adding on to it!
