Visiting Salem

So I'm going to be spending time around Salem, MA in a couple of months and was wondering if anyone knows of anything cool to see or do. I specifically mean the kinds of things that are appropriate to a tarot forum, not the Peabody-Essex Museum, House of Seven Gables, Crane's Beach, etc.

Charlie Brown, a friend and I make an annual pilgrimage to Salem, usually in October.

I recommend you start with the Salem Trolley tour, which lasts about an hour, and takes you all over the village, as well as a little ways out of town and back. The guide will point out historic homes, places where movies were filmed (Hocus Pocus, et. al.), sites relating to the Witch Trials, and so on. Once you've done that, you can pick out some places to visit on foot at your convenience.

If you're in Salem in October, there is always a street fair on weekends on Essex Street (same street as the Peabody Essex). That's completely worth a walk-through. Various vendors will have tarot-related items, although your best bet are the "witch shops", which regularly carry tarot supplies such as decks, bags, books, and reading cloths. I've visited Omen, which I recall as being pretty good, and Hex, and Crow Haven Corner. The "witch shops" are open all year.

A place called The Witchery offers something called "The Tarot Experience," which apparently includes live performances and various other media (music, art, video, etc.) based on tarot. Apparently during the performance, someone draws cards and the audience helps interpret it/them. I really can't tell you a lot about it, since I haven't seen it for myself yet. If you do attend, please post something about it here. I am hoping to get tickets for a show this October. The Witchery is about a block away from the House of the Seven Gables.

Usually the local mall hosts a Psychic Fair during October weekends as well. If you aren't going to be in Salem that month, there are plenty of shops and individuals who offer tarot readings and workshops all year round.

There are also various ghost tours, the historic cemetery with markers commemorating the Witch Trials, and a host of witch museums. If you stop at the Salem National Park Regional Visitors' Center (located in the heart of historic Salem and right across from the parking garage), you can ask the staff for recommendations and directions, and pick up maps and brochures.

My friend and I have made this trip for the last five years or so, and we still haven't seen it all. Enjoy!

Thanks for all that. That's great.
